My Approach

Picking a therapist can feel overwhelming. What if I choose the wrong one? How will I know?

While I have 16 years of formal education in Psychology, Social Sciences, and Counseling, it is my own personal experience which has given me the greatest ability to also understand what my clients are going through.

I believe we bring an added dimension into counseling when we augment formal training with those lessons we’ve learned by having to navigate through our own difficult life experiences.

I see couples, families, and individuals, and specialize in helping with attachment, anxiety, depression, trauma, and the stress due to life changes. As your counselor, I will be fully engaged in my work with you, helping you to discover answers and solutions.

There is overlap in psychological approaches, because there is overlap in the basic psychology of all individuals. Every client is different, and different modalities will be better for an individual client’s needs. I will likely use one or two primary modalities. However, there are times when using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy may eventually move into working with Internal Family Systems, if the client has trauma from the past, and decides to address it. The reverse is equally true.

I can not imagine ignoring the wisdom in the tenets of Family Systems Therapy, as an adjunct to any other modality. In all modalities, Motivational Interviewing may play a helpful role at times, with getting un-stuck. Narrative Therapy can be a capstone, as well as an ongoing, and oft-repeated mantra you will hear from me, though I do not use it as a primary modality.

A catharsis is easily forgotten. A story is not.

I am very interactive with clients, and help them to navigate issues in practical, as well as therapeutic ways. I give 150% to every session, and provide psycho-education as needed.

Many issues which feel confusing to a client, are well-known in the psychological community. It can be freeing to hear a bit of wisdom which suddenly puts a workable spin on a dilemma.

We can all get stuck in a hamster wheel of rumination, which seems to have no exit. Sometimes we just need a change of perspective, and a chance to spin it all out with a professional. I enjoy helping people problem solve, and a lot of what I bring into the counseling experience is a way to help simplify the problem, and break it down into its composite parts, to help you find your solution.

I believe in being therapeutic in the way the client needs, and sometimes this is simply a few sessions. Further sessions can be added as the need arises, or if a deeper understanding of an issue is desired.
